Ashleigh McKinstry

I  have been riding since  I was 2  years old and brought on all my own ponies. I first represented my  Pony Club when I was 10 years old in the NZPCA Dressage Championships and went on from there to represent the Pony  Club in Dressage, Show Jumping and Eventing for several years with various placings along the way. I also took on the head instructor position for a year before I left Pony Club due to other commitments.

I began  to specialise in eventing when I was 15 years old. A year later  I brought my first NSC saddle, an Advanced Competitor which I still love to this day.

I did my first 2** at Richfields  when I was  16 and finished a creditable 7th. This is where I was first spotted by  Eventing NZ selectors  and invited to a training camp for the Young Rider Squad. From there I was selected for the Young Rider Trans Tasman in  Australia,  where I finished 5th in the 2** class as part of the NZ winning team. I was the youngest rider in the competition. I then went on to represent NZ in the Young  Rider  Trans Tasman again in 2010 where I won the individual and the 2** class, going on to make a successful step up to advanced winning my first event.

I had a successful first season at 3*** level, winning the prestige  Puhinui 3*** event.
I was short listed for the  2013 Senior Trans Tasman but due to a horse injury missed selection and was unable to complete the Super League series but still held on to 2nd place.

2016 Updates

My super exciting up and coming 8 year old Pioneer Brass Monkey had a win at the Taupo autumn horse trial and a  4th at Horse of the Year in the 2** and did his first 3*** start unfortunately his performance declined after that and he didn’t seem quite himself, turns out he had an inflammation in his lungs, caused by either a virus or an allergy. There were no outwardly signs of anything. He could not compete due to the medication he is on.
I have plenty of beautiful and talented young horses that I am so excited about. I have 8 in work at the moment and 6 more to break in so I am going to be extremely busy over winter and will be going to a lot of winter events to get them mileaged.
Brass Monkey will be going out as well to continue consolidating and lots of training with coaches seems he had such a light season.
Pioneer Makokomiko has been semi retired due to on going issues. Dannie Lodders daughter Scout is taking him to ride for a while.  With Pioneer Makokomiko being so small I would never use any saddle other than an NSC saddle on him.  The nice short base of the saddles suited him so well and didn’t interfere with his way of going.
I love NSC saddles, I ride everything from green broken to 3*** competition horses in  them. I am so comfortable and secure. NSC’s mobile fitting makes it considerably easier to have the saddles regularly  checked over and fittings adjusted as the horses change shape.
